Is Snowden about to become a refugee in Russia?

The former NSA contractor could walk out of the Moscow airport with temporary political asylum Wednesday ? much to the chagrin of the United States.

Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden could walk out of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport on Wednesday as a documented Russian political refugee, according to the Kremlin-connected lawyer who's been handling his affairs.

"He should get this certificate [allowing him to leave the airport] shortly," the official Voice of Russia radio station quoted lawyer Anatoly Kucherena as saying.

Russian authorities have suggested it could take up to three months to fully process his request for political asylum. But Mr. Kucherena said a temporary document will likely be issued?tomorrow?that will enable him to leave the legal limbo of Sheremetyevo's transit zone ? where he has now been stranded for exactly a month ? and move to premises in downtown Moscow.

One straw in the wind that suggests Russian authorities may be leaning toward taking in the wayward ex-CIA employee, despite intense US pressure not to, is a timely round of statements from Russian government sources slamming the US for its "double standards" in dealing with Russian extradition requests.

The main thrust of Washington's appeal to Moscow has been that Mr. Snowden is a common criminal who should be handed over out of shared civilizational values, even though there is no formal extradition treaty between the US and Russia.

"Mr. Snowden ought to be returned to the United States to face the felony charges against him," United States Ambassador to Moscow?Michael McFaul tweeted?on Monday.

But in what looked like a coordinated pair of official blasts, Russian law enforcement agencies claimed that they have never experienced that sort of courtesy from their US counterparts.

"[Russian] law agencies have asked the US on many occasions to extradite wanted criminals through Interpol channels, but those requests were neither met nor even responded to," interior ministry spokesman Andrei Pilipchuk is quoted as saying by the Kremlin-funded, English-language news network Russia Today, which prefers to be known as RT.

And Sergei Gorlenko, head of the chief prosecutor's extradition office in Moscow, told the independent Interfax agency that "the United States has repeatedly refused Russian requests to extradite individuals, to hold them criminally liable, including those accused of committing serious crimes. We have been denied the extradition of murderers, bandits and bribetakers."

Officially, Russia has struck an ambivalent attitude toward Snowden since he arrived ? completely uninvited, President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly insisted. On one hand, Mr. Putin has said from the beginning that Russia will never extradite him to the US. On the other hand, he and other Russian officials have frequently wished out loud over the past month that Snowden would just move along, and stop creating unwanted complications for an already troubled US-Russia relationship.

Many Russians have embraced the idea of taking Snowden in, largely because it would represent an impressive turning-of-cold-war-tables, in which Russia becomes a free-speech haven for dissidents fleeing the US.

But Putin has been visibly cold to the idea, perhaps out of worries that the ongoing Snowden situation could chill planned talks with President Barack Obama?at the St. Petersburg G20 summit that's barely a month away, or even prompt a US-led boycott of the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics, as at least one US senator has suggested.

One piece of the puzzle regarding official Russia's attitude toward Snowden concerns the role of the lawyer, Mr. Kucherena, who has apparently enjoyed almost unrestricted access to his client in the extraterritorial no-man's land of Sheremetyevo's transit zone.

Kucherena is chairman of the law enforcement commission in Russia's Public Chamber, a semi-official assembly of Kremlin-approved civil society groups and a prominent Moscow lawyer. The Kremlin-funded RT network, which has been able to talk extensively with Kucherena,?has posted a thumbnail biography of him.

But other analysts suggest Kucherena may be part of a Kremlin plan to admit Snowden to Russia, but keep him boxed in and under tight control of Russian security services.???

In other words, Snowden may successfully leap from the frying pan of Sheremetyevo's sterile transit zone, but it remains to be seen where he will land.

$53 Million In Jewels Stolen In Massive Heist In France - Business ...

A staggering 40 million euro ($53 million) worth of diamonds and other jewels were stolen from an Israeli billionaire in Cannes on Sunday in what?s being described as ?one of Europe?s biggest jewelry heists recent years,? according to French police.

The Associated Press?reported?that the theft occurred at the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel which was hosting a jewelry exhibition this summer from the Leviev diamond house, owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

According to the AP:

A police spokesman said the theft took place around noon, but he could not confirm local media reports that the robber was a single gunman who stuffed a suitcase with the gems before making a swift exit. The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record.

Several police officers were placed in front of the Carlton exhibition room to prevent journalists and photographers gathered at the scene from entering.

The AP described the hotel as being situated ?on the exclusive Promenade de la Croisette that stretches a mile and a half along the French Riviera, and is thronged by the rich and famous throughout the year? and is especially popular among film stars attending the annual Cannes Film Festival.

It also reports that the hotel?s location has not only a beautiful sea view, ?but an easy get away for potential jewel thieves along the long stretch of road.?

Hotel officials haven?t commented, and the AP?s attempts to reach Leviev and his company were not immediately successful.

According to?a report in the Israeli paper Haaretz,?the hotel is ironically ?one of the settings for Alfred Hitchcock?s classic 1955 thriller ?To Catch a Thief.??

This weekend?s theft comes on the heels of the daring escape from a prison in Switzerland on Thursday by a member the notorious ?Pink Panther? jewel thief gang.

Quoting police, the AP reported that the convicted jewel thief escaped ?after accomplices rammed a gate and overpowered guards with bursts from their AK-47s?:

Poparic fled with fellow inmate Adrian Albrecht from the Orbe prison in the western state of Vaud.

Police say the Pink Panthers network?s members are prime suspects in a series of daring thefts. According to Interpol, the group has targeted luxury watch and jewelry stores in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States, netting more than ?330 million (?285m) since 1999.

Poparic is the third member of the Pink Panthers to escape from a Swiss prison in as many months, according to Vaud police.

So far French police won?t say how many gems were stolen from the exhibition that was supposed to continue through August.

Cruise - Business Insider

People get ripped off all the time. They either fight it, or forget about it because they decide it isn't worth the effort.

When my wife and I paid more than $220 for a Fourth of July fireworks and dinner cruise that never actually cruised for the fireworks, I chose to fight for a full refund.

Let this be a cautionary tale to always do your due diligence, even before booking something as innocent as a river cruise.

We booked our cruise months in advance through Wesell.com, which operates their event cruise booking through Oncruises.com.

For $222.95, we were promised a cruise along the Hudson River off New York City on the Star Of Palm Beach. The price was supposed to include "VIP" tickets for a "VIP" table, access to an open bar and a buffet-style dinner from which fireworks watchers could "oooh!" and "ahhhh!" at the pyrotechnic display as they danced, drank, and generally were merry.

Didn't work out that way.

Here's how it went down.

After purchasing the tickets, hopeful cruise-goers are told to line up at the dock by 5 p.m. for a 6 p.m. boarding of the ship. This year, the line stretched out under the sun, in 90 degree temperatures. We waited.

And waited.

OncruiseLine1a

Chris C. Anderson

Until eventually 6 p.m. came and went like a summer intern, with no sign of the Star of Palm Beach.

6:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m. Still no sign of the ship and we watched the other lines dwindle as their boats came, loaded them up, and left. At around 7 p.m. there was a flurry of activity as the front of the line swung around and started heading for another dock to line up. They were told the ship would be loading there. Off we went ...

Book with Wesell.com and prepare to have a terrible time. Oncruise

Chris C. Anderson

... where we waited some more. But at least it was out of the heat. Now it's 7 :05 p.m. and the boat is an hour late.

Oncruise cruise terrible

Chris C. Anderson

Folks were understandably getting testy at this point.

We continued to wait with no notification from the staff as to what was going on or where the ship was. We started to see staff ferry food boxes and DJ equipment past us onto the dock. Hopes were raised. Then at around 7:30 p.m. the boat docked. Excitement! The crowd settled down a bit until a worker announced that everybody had to move back to the original line, and that only the food and staff would be loading here due to safety concerns.

People were not happy. You can see crew staff here trying to tell people who refuse to leave the line to go.

Chris C. Anderson

They eventually gave in and went to line up in the old line. They weren't happy campers.

Oncruises customers unhappy

Chris C. Anderson

So we waited some more. And some more. The ship was still docked at the other pier. The fireworks were supposed to start around 9 p.m., and we knew if the ship didn't leave soon we might not be in a great spot to watch them.

Still, we waited. It was still hot out. No announcements. No water.

The ship finally pulled up to the dock where we were lined up. At least the view looked pretty from there.

Crowding began as staff started actually letting people onto the ship. But they never announced that the boarding began, only that "Those wearing VIP bracelets come to the front!" which further enraged the agitated crowd. There was no such thing as VIP in this line.

Chris C. Anderson

By this point we debated even getting on the ship; thought about calling it a day. But we decided we'd paid for a cruise, and we'd waited this long so we were going to get our cruise no matter what. Were we wrong.

Finally, we boarded. By this time it was about 8:25 p.m. We shuffled on board and found our "VIP" table ? keep in mind we paid extra for the VIP tickets ? only to find it was a small table inside the ship next to grimy windows you can barely see out of. OK, no problem. We agree we'll get some drinks as we wait to ship off. We got a few Coronas in plastic cups, lined up for some truly horrible buffet (more on that in a bit) and sat down next to the excessively loud DJ booth.

StarOfPalmBeach Fireworks View

Chris C. Anderson

8:45 p.m. We still hadn't left the dock. One of the passengers told us he'd heard the ship actually wouldn't be leaving the dock, because the pier is situated directly across from where the Macy's fireworks barges are shooting off their loads, and the Coast Guard won't allow any more ships to leave.

That was the final straw. We got off the boat. The party "cruise" wasn't happening. The ship wasn't leaving for the fireworks. We just paid $222.95 to watch the fireworks from the shore on the docks.

Star of palm beach never leaving the dock

Chris C. Anderson

Docked or on the river, this ship wasn't meant for great fireworks viewing anyway. There was no room on the cramped top deck and you couldn't see anything from the dance floor area. Regardless, some people still chose to remain on the ship to at least get some (now) very expensive drinks.

We watched the fireworks from the shore and they were spectacular, then we fought the crowds on the street to get home.

This was a fireworks cruise that never cruised for the fireworks. Some Yelpers said it did set sail after 10 p.m.. The organization was horrible, the staff rude and unhelpful, all of which could almost have been forgiven had the Star Of Palm Beach actually cruised for the fireworks.

To add insult to injury, I got food poisoning from the buffet food. Two doctor's visits, 10 days out of commission and a loss of 13 pounds later, the doc says it was bad food. The only food I'd eaten that day was the buffet.

This is where things get even more tricky.

No concern for the customer

We reached out to Oncruises.com, which re-directs to parent company Wesell.com. You wouldn't know that Oncruises is a property of Wesell.com by visiting the Oncruises website, which makes it doubly difficult to understand who it is you're supposed to talk to. For two days we repeatedly called and left messages with customer service and emailed through their contact form for a request to discuss a refund for the fireworks cruise that wasn't.

Finally, the following week we were able to get through to a customer service representative named Aoise who was very apologetic and promised us a full refund. All we had to do was fill out their online form and they would get back to us Monday. We did as asked, but recieved no call or email that week. This week, we called and left a message on Wednesday, and again called on Friday, when we were finally able to get through.

It was a much different story this time.

Aoise informed us that Wesell.com couldn't reimburse us for any more than 40% of the total ticket cost. When confronted with the fact that she previously said there would be a full refund, she flatly stated she never said that, and there was nothing more she could give. After going around for another 10 minutes, we asked to be escalated up. She put us through to her supervisor Christina Anderson (no relation!) and we explained the situation anew.

Christina restated that they could only "refund what we took in from the event itself," and the best she could do was 50% of the total ticket cost.

I asked her if this policy is in their terms and conditions and she said that everything is there when you purchase a ticket.

This is actually all that is listed for refunds under Oncruises terms and conditions:

Screen Shot 2013 07 26 at 3.39.17 PM

Onstar

There is no mention of the maximum 40% protocol that was stated by customer service. What is interesting though, is that they will only refund if an event is canceled. Both customer service reps used this as the basis for not giving a full refund for the Fourth Of July Cruise, as the "party event" still occurred on the ship, just at the dock.

This simply isn't the case though, as the event was billed as a fireworks cruise, and that never happened. The ship was docked during the fireworks. The ship didn't make it out until after 10 p.m., over 4 hours late. Not one person on that ship would qualify that event as not being canceled.

To top things off, despite repeated requests as to why the ship was so late in the first place, no answer was ever given.

We asked if there was another contact we could reach out to for this story, and were given the email address for somebody in Wesell.com's business development office. When we asked for the name of the CEO, we were told it is Eddie Miller, but a quick search came back with "Miller Ilya" as the CFO, and were also told that they would not give out his contact information "under any circumstances" even after we informed them this would be published as a story about Wesell.?

At this point, we'll consider ourselves lucky to get back even the 50% refund from cruise that never cruised for the fireworks, the event that "wasn't canceled."?

Here's what we should have done differently ...

Companies hidden behind layers of smaller properties and those that filter their customers through layers of unresponsive and unhelpful representatives that only results in more backtracking and penny pinching aren't companies that you should give your money to.

Judging from our experience, it's obvious Wesell.com is going for the absolute bottom line and taking advantage of those people who have the misfortune of signing up for one of their cruises or "events." The way they're doing business now, there's no recourse for the consumer to push back. Except through getting the word out that you'll likely have a better time sitting at home with friends or family than to ever consider booking anything through one of Wesell.com's properties.?

Your first warning should be the Yelp reviews,?the Trip Advisor reviews?and the "F" rating on the Better Business Bureau. Should you for some reason not heed the warnings of either, let this story be a cautionary tale as to the full experience we had booking through Wesell.com's Oncruises.?

In our case, it was a New York City 4th Of July fireworks cruise and from beginning to end, the entire experience was a total disaster. Wesell.com's questionable refund policy and travesty of a customer service department is a clear indication of a company that cares little about their customer's experience with their brand.

EDIT: We searched out some reviews of a few of Wesell.com's other properties and were met with similar results with both Pubcrawls.com and Californianightlife.com.?

One star on Yelp for Pubcrawls.com.

One and a half stars for Californianightlife.com

?If you have had a horrible experience with a business, fight back if you have the energy. That's the only way other folks out there end up having less of a chance of getting ripped off. If you're unable to resolve an issue on your own, you should consider?filing a complaint with the?Better Business Bureau.

Five Benefits of Solar Energy

Solar Energy Benefits

Although some form of solar power has been available for decades, the technology has only recently gained mainstream acceptance and attracted the interest of big-time utility companies. On a per-kilowatt basis, solar power remains expensive relative to conventional sources of energy like coal and natural gas. Nevertheless, its overall cost continues to shrink at a rapid rate. As solar power becomes an increasingly important component of the country's "energy mix," it's worth taking a look at five major benefits of solar power.

Homeowners and business owners who install solar panels on their property enjoy more equitable relationships with their local utilities. Whereas conventional arrangements between utilities and their customers require the latter to be wholly dependent on the former, solar power users gain a measure of independence from their utilities. Even if their solar panels don't produce all of the power that they need on a daily basis, they'll need to buy less conventional power. If they produce more power than they require, their utilities may actually pay them for it at a fluctuating wholesale rate. For cash-strapped homeowners, this can turn into a significant source of revenue.

Along with various state agencies, the federal government offers attractive subsidies for private individuals who install solar panels or solar heating devices in their homes. In certain jurisdictions, generous subsidies may be available for businesses as well. Generally speaking, these incentives allow solar power users to claim tax credits in proportion to the amount of generation capacity that they install on their property. This reduces solar power start-up costs and increases the profitability of the technology.

Although the production of solar panels does require some inputs of raw materials and energy, solar power's environmental impact is minimal. The technology produces none of the carbon, methane or particulate emissions that fossil fuels emit, and it doesn't demand large-scale mining or drilling operations. Since panel arrays can be placed on rooftops or in isolated desert areas, solar power's physical footprint is manageable as well.

The solar power industry's "innovation engine" has resulted in the creation of tens of thousands of jobs in the last decade alone. Although proponents of conventional energy technologies argue that the solar industry destroys more fossil fuel-related jobs than it creates, this is a misleading claim. After all, solar panel production is just a small facet of an overall industry that demands contributions from installation technicians, salespeople, battery-storage designers and other key players.

Since the dawn of the fossil fuel age, the United States? reliance on unstable or hostile countries to supply oil, gas and other energy resources has caused plenty of trouble. Indeed, the country's political and business leaders are often forced to make unsavory compromises with shady or dangerous parties in order to guarantee steady energy imports. Since all of the solar power that the United States needs can be generated within the country's own borders, the technology has the potential to eliminate this less-than-ideal reliance on imperfect actors. In the long run, such a development could increase the economic and physical security of every American citizen.

Solar power shouldn't be mistaken for a cure-all that's capable of single-handedly solving all of the world's social, environmental and political ills. However, it's a valuable technology that's increasingly competitive with traditional sources of energy. Moreover, its benefits are undeniable. In the future, solar power is all but assured to have a lasting and overwhelmingly positive impact on our society.

Judge Delays Decision on Legal Control Over Amanda Bynes ...

NEW YORK (KTLA) ?? A posh hotel in New York has accused Amanda Bynes of trashing one of its rooms, according to TMZ.

The alleged incident happened at the Ritz-Carlton days before Bynes was detained on a psychiatric hold in Ventura County.

Hotelroom

Amanda Bynes is accused of leaving piles of trash in a hotel room in New York (TMZ)

TMZ obtained photos of the room where Bynes reportedly stayed. The pictures showed piles of garbage, ashes, and a destroyed smoke alarm.

The hotel? asked the actress to leave last Thursday for smoking marijuana in the room and being rude to hotel staff, TMZ reported. However, Bynes denied the allegations.

Meantime, the actress is now being held at a psychiatric hospital in California after she was detained this week for lighting a fire outside a Thousand Oaks home, authorities said.

Immediately after the incident, Bynes parents filed a petition for legal control over her affairs, and were in court on Friday.

But a Ventura County judge delayed making a decision on the petition, saying he first wanted to speak with the actress.

Superior Court Judge Glen M. Reiser went on to say an emergency decision was not needed on the conservatorship filing because Bynes remains under a 14-day mental-health hold.

She was initially placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold, which was extended Thursday to two weeks.

?We are deeply concerned that Amanda poses a substantial risk to herself, to others and to property based on recent events in her life,? the conservatorship petition reads.

Her parents claim Amanda was ?extremely paranoid? about being ?watched? when she lived in their residence, covering smoke alarms with towels, taping windows shut and covering her car?s dashboard with cardboard and tape out of fear that ?cameras were watching her.?

They also? believe she is spending ?a substantial amount? for marijuana and other illegal substances, according to TMZ. And they say they think their daughter is ?homeless? at the moment.

A new hearing was scheduled for Aug. 9, after Bynes was expected to be released from the hospital.

Women in the Senate

Do women make better US senators than men? Jill Lawrence looks at that question, and the women of the Senate, in The National Journal. The 20 women of the Senate ? 16 Democrats and four Republicans ? may not always agree, but in an era of polarization, they demonstrate a remarkable commitment to collegiality. Nearly all say they bring collaborative problem-solving skills to the Senate.?

As Ms. Lawrence chronicles, ?there is plenty of evidence, in the form of deals made and bills passed, that women know how to get things done? in the Senate ? by leveraging their caucus and through bipartisan, bicameral consensus-building. Now, after decades of hard-fought gains by pioneering women senators, traditional ?women?s issues? (such as health and education) are mainstream, making up roughly a third of the Senate docket. And women senators lead on key committees ? budget, intelligence, and defense.?

Lawrence writes that ?there are too few [women in the Senate], and their arrival on the scene has been too recent, to draw any conclusions? as to whether they are more effective than their male colleagues. But their personal connections and the bills they champion point to a needed cooperation missing in Congress.

Mandela, the patriarch

In a commentary in South Africa?s Mail & Guardian newspaper, Colleen Lowe Morna, founding chief executive of the country?s Commission on Gender Equality under Nelson Mandela, writes, ?If we are to learn from Mandela, we need to acknowledge that his gender legacy is chequered.??

Mr. Mandela?s journey from ?old-school patriarch to a modern husband in his third marriage? ? teaches about the evolution of gender equality as well as his humble commitment to personal growth. The same holds lessons for societal progress now ? and for Mandela?s feuding family, struggling with what Ms. Morna sees as the consequences of patriarchy.

Among them: Mandela named his eldest grandson heir to his tribal legacy, bypassing his oldest daughter. Morna questions ?whether this legacy would not have been safer in the hands of an older daughter than in those of an ill-prepared, younger grandson? who has fueled family controversy. But Morna is certain that as a good leader, Mandela ?would ask us to learn from his greatness and from his human failings.?

Foursquare Opens Self-Service Advertising to Small Businesses ...

Foursquare PromotedFoursquare is expanding their advertising availability to small businesses worldwide with a new self-service platform.

While many advertisers are familiar with advertising platforms such as Google AdWords that allow you to place ads without having to go through a rep, Foursquare is beginning to take that approach with their new ad program and available self-service tools for potential advertisers.

Advertising on mobile devices based upon where a person is at that moment is always a tricky endeavor. It can sometimes be hard to track mobile ad ROI because many users might see a mobile ad and end up at that business despite never actually clicking on the ad.

Foursquare has definitely taken this into consideration to not only bump up their own ad revenue, but also make it clear to advertisers when there is actually a conversion for those ads.

Foursquare's approach is to not only charge an advertiser when a user looks at the larger listing for an advertisement within Foursquare. They are also taking it one step further, by charging advertisers when a user either checks in at that business after they've seen the advertising on Foursquare.

While on the surface, advertisers might think that they could possibly be charged for an ad that didn't necessarily bring in the customer who checked in at their location, it definitely helps advertisers get a better idea of their conversions. But also, people are getting user data for specific users who checked in and the advertising they saw prior to the check-in.

Advertisers won't pay for ad impressions. There definitely is value in those impressions even if the user doesn't click through, especially with the current small number of advertisers and resulting low competition for promoted listing space. It alerts users that you're there, what your business is, and where you're located.

Ads do show up with an icon in the word "Promoted" next to it, so it's clearly defined as being a paid advertisement as opposed to a natural listing. There is no word if businesses are required to maintain a specific CTR or check-in rate, if there is a minimum monthly ad spend, or what the low end cost of those ad clicks or chick-ins will be.

Foursquare has opened up their self-service ad platform to a few thousand local businesses and they will open it to more in the coming months. It is currently available in the U.S., UK, Turkey, Brazil, and Russia. You can request to get on the list to be one of the businesses chosen to test it out.

Helen Thomas Leaves Behind a Legacy as Controversial as the Life She Lived

When news was released this morning that former White House correspondent Helen Thomas had passed away at the age of 92, the Internet lit up with outpourings of both support and condemnation for a woman who lived her life on the edge of extreme candor.

Thomas racked up a lot of first-place honors for women in media, and at a time when women weren't allowed in the media: She was the first woman to become a chief White House correspondent for a news wire, the first woman to join the White House Correspondents? Association, and the first woman to serve as the leader of that association. Thomas held a chair in the White House press room over the course of five decades, from presidents Kennedy to Obama.

But it was her refusal to treat any leader or subject with kid gloves that earned her a fierce reputation; she prized piercing honesty well above any inclinations she may have had to stay polite or likeable.

As she was once famously quoted, ?If you want to be loved, go into something else.?

Thomas? career took an ugly turn when a video of her went viral in 2010; in it, she said Israelis should "get out of Palestine" and "go home" to Germany, Poland or the U.S. As a result, she was forced into retirement.

Her supporters contend that her objection was aimed at the practices of the Israeli government, but detractors still call her statements anti-Semitic. Today, the divisive nature of those comments lives on:

@davidfolkenflik judge her by 7+decades as constant irritant to the powerful and comfortable - even while breaking barriers

? Andrea Mitchell (@mitchellreports) July 20, 2013

What can be agreed upon is that in her role as a White House correspondent, she never showed deference to authority when there was a tough question to be asked. In fact, she famously called President Bush "the worst president in U.S. history." These are a some of the most notable memories of her.

The Associated Press Reports:

In March 2005, she confronted Bush with the proposition that "your decision to invade Iraq has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis" and every justification for the attack proved false.

"Why did you really want to go to war?" she demanded.

When Bush began explaining his rationale, she interjected: "They didn't do anything to you, or to our country."

"Excuse me for a second," Bush replied. "They did. The Taliban provided safe haven for al-Qaeda. That's where al-Qaeda trained."

"I'm talking about Iraq," she said.

Former AP reporter Jennifer Loven told NPR:

?You know, there is a confederation among journalists that you help each other up until the moment when you have to beat the crap out of each other. And she was true to that.?

Other journalists Tweeted their own thoughts about Thomas:

Fire destroys Tuschen Housing Scheme property : Kaieteur News

?

-family of four homeless

A family of four was yesterday rendered homeless after their two-storey, three-bedroom Lot 2253 Tuschen Housing Scheme home was destroyed by fire at around 11:15hrs.

Ganesh Persaud with his wife and two children.

Owner of the house, a furniture maker and supplier, Ganesh Persaud also known as Amar, told this newspaper that one of his employees was in the lower flat of the building which housed a furniture workshop, when he noticed thick smoke emanating from the wooden upper flat.
The man reportedly rushed across the street to a neighbour?s house for assistance. The Fire Service was then summoned, but by the time a fire tender arrived, the wooden upper flat was completely burnt, while the lower concrete flat was gutted by the fire.
?This was a fully furnished house. It had everything; TV, microwave, stereo set? all my savings working to extend this house and better my family. But today I have nothing,? Persaud lamented.
The father of two calculated his losses as being in excess of seven million dollars. The family moved into the house in 2007, when it was a mere one bedroom.
?This was a li?l, li?l house, and we work day and night, hard, hard, and we build it up. Now today everything I worked for turn to ashes now. We have no clothes, documents, money?we nah have nothing left,? the distressed man said.
He added that a shed which was detached from the house and a workshop attached to its lower flat that contained woodworking machineries, were the only parts of the house that did not get burnt to the ground.
However, the machines suffered water damages as a result of efforts to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Investigations by the Guyana Fire Service are continuing.

The few woodworking machineries that were saved from the fire, has suffered water damages.

Orlando #15 Best City For Ice Cream Says Travel & Leisure

Travel & Leisure magazine published their 'America's Best Cities for Ice Cream' and Orlando came in at #15! It was the?only Florida city to make the list. ?

The magazine said, "In this kid-friendly town, ice cream stands and parlors may be the equivalent of coffee joints in Seattle: essential to everyday life."

Two ice cream shops were mentioned by name: Ivanhoe Village's Twister Bliss and Winter Park's Lu Lu's Ice Cream Shop.?

Lu Lu's said they were honored to be mentioned on ?their facebook page. The shop is on the same plot of land as Eat More Produce. ?We showed you?the shop in April before it opened. It's a mobile food vending trailer decorated to look like a tiny yellow house. As far as theming goes, this has to be one of Orlando's best looking food trucks. And now it's also one of Orlando's most famous ice cream spots.?

Twisted Bliss's new mechanical horse, Dancer, is giving visitors with a Twisted Bliss wristband free rides Saturday, July 20.?

Invention disclosures nearly doubled at Indiana University

Last modified: Wednesday, July 17, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 17, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University faculty and researchers have nearly doubled the number of invention disclosures in the past three years.

According to the IU Research and Technology Corp., a not-for-profit organization that assists IU faculty and researchers in realizing the commercial potential of their discoveries, invention disclosures have nearly doubled from 131 in FY 2009 to 230 in FY 2012.

An invention disclosure is an important part of the discovery process and is the first step toward developing a commercialization and licensing strategy. All IU faculty and researchers must complete an invention disclosure for any invention created or discovery realized through the use of university funds, equipment and/or facilities. Once the discovery or invention is publicly disclosed, faculty and researchers have one year to file a patent in the United States. Public disclosures include publishing journal articles or information on the Internet, giving presentations and interviews, or submitting nonconfidential grant applications.

"We are committed to helping IU faculty and researchers move their discoveries from the university to the marketplace in an effort to promote scholarship, economic development and additional research opportunities," said Marie Kerbeshian, IURTC vice president of technology commercialization. "When a faculty member contacts us with an invention disclosure, we work closely with them to develop their ideas along the commercialization pathway."

While a majority of the invention disclosures are completed by faculty and researchers on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and IU Bloomington campuses, the IURTC fosters collaboration from faculty and researchers at seven IU campuses. Each campus is provided with a technology manager who will discuss the potential of inventions with faculty and researchers as well as help them understand the technology evaluation process.

Over the past three years, the IURTC has seen a wide breadth of invention disclosures from IU faculty and researchers such as:

  • A disinfecting solution to preserve arson investigation samples.
  • New molecules to treat emphysema.
  • Methods to enhance and prolong battery life.
  • Fungus to help plants grow in polluted wetlands.

The IURTC Office of Technology Commercialization also works with foundations and companies to help them develop strong research relationships with IU's faculty to benefit all parties.

Since 1997, the IURTC and its university clients have been responsible for:

  • More than 2,000 inventions.
  • Nearly 500 patents.
  • 72 start-up companies.

About Indiana University Research and Technology Corp.

Headquartered in Indianapolis, the IU Research and Technology Corp. actively engages the strengths of Indiana University to support the health, economic and social development of Indiana, the nation and world through technology commercialization, business and economic development and technology parks.

Home Improvement | Room Addition | Dean Johnson Remodeling ...

Posted

Are you a classic workaholic? Do you own a home business? If you answered yes, then it sounds like you might need a home office. If you don?t have enough space in your current household for an office space,?a room addition may be the perfect solution. Our team of Minneapolis home improvement specialists is ready to turn your home?s thinking area into a productive office space. At Dean Johnson Remodeling, we are ready to help you design and build the home office you?ve wanted and needed.

Planning for a Home Office

Once you have decided on a home office addition to your home, it?s time to start planning. There are many things to consider when taking on any home addition project, but with an office addition, this is especially true. If you have a home business, it is the source of your livelihood, so you?ll want to take some extra consideration when making plans.

1. Functionality. First and foremost, you need to design a room that is going to encourage productivity and your creative juices to flow. It needs to be a space that will be functional and practical. Big enough to serve your needs, but cozy enough for you to be comfortable.

2. Unique Space. You?ll need to create a room you?re actually going to work in. Getting into ?work mode? may be especially difficult when you?re just walking down the hall. So, it is imperative you think about this room differently than all the rest of the ones in your home.

3. Proportionate. Once you have your room addition built by our team of Minneapolis home improvement experts, you?ll want to furnish it appropriately. Don?t invest in a huge desk or large bookshelves if you?re not going to use them. This will actually make you feel less productive.

Our experienced team will be able to walk you through all the decisions you?ll have to make. A room addition can be a fun way to increase productivity and your working capabilities.

Get started on your room addition today by calling us at 763-479-4820 or Request an Estimate.

Ghost particles: New limits on extremely rare decay

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Neutrinos are the most elusive particles having extremely weak interactions with all other particles. They have rather unusual properties and are even expected to be identical with their own antiparticles. So far this property is, however, not experimentally verified even though many studies of neutrinos over the last 60 years have already boosted our understanding of elementary particle physics. Now scientists have obtained new strong limits for the so-called neutrino-less double beta decay, which tests if neutrinos are their own antiparticles.

Marathon bombing suspect on Rolling Stone cover

BOSTON (AP) ? A Rolling Stone cover story on Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) is generating controversy online.

The magazine's cover is a photo in which Tsarnaev looks more like one of the rock stars that usually grace it than a suspect in a high-profile bombing. A preview on the magazine's website says the story by contributing editor Janet Reitman traces how "a bright kid with a charming future became a monster."

Some Twitter users call the decision to use the photo disgraceful and are calling for a boycott of the magazine.

An email seeking comment was sent to Rolling Stone.

Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty in the April 15 bombings at the marathon finish line that killed three and wounded more than 260.

Bankruptcy Tips And Advice From The Experts | Financial Solutions

It?s hard to make the decision of filing for personal bankruptcy; however, sometimes there?s no choice. Before filing for bankruptcy, it is important that you fully understand what it means and what is involved in the bankruptcy process. Keep reading for information that can help you get through this trying time.

Most people end up filing for personal bankruptcy because they owe more than they make. If you?re in this position, it is a good thing to familiarize yourself with the laws that apply in your area. When it comes to bankruptcy, states have varying laws. Your house is safe in certain states; however, in other states, it isn?t. Be aware of bankruptcy laws before filing your claim.

When it soaks in that filing for personal bankruptcy, don?t use all of your retirement funds, or all of your savings to resolve insolvency or pay creditors. Unless there is no other choice a retirement account should not be used. Of course you will have to touch some of your savings to get through all of the hearings, but do not put out any money that you do not have to by law.

If you know people who have filed for bankruptcy, ask them who they would recommend rather than relying on Internet reviews or worse, just randomly picking someone out of the phone book. To handle your bankruptcy, you need a trusted attorney, not a shady one that is out to take your money.

Prior to filing for bankruptcy, discover which assets cannot be seized. The Bankruptcy Code provides a listing of the various asset types that are not included in the bankruptcy process. Prior to filing for bankruptcy, it is critical that you go over this list, so that you know if you can expect any of your most valuable possessions to be seized. While it might not be possible to protect a particularly beloved possession, at least you will know in advance whether or not you risk losing it.

Familiarize yourself with the bankruptcy code before you file. This area of law is in constant flux and it is imperative that you know where the law stands at the time you file for your bankruptcy. To find out about these changes, you can look at your state?s legislation website or contact their office.

Consider other alternatives before filing for bankruptcy. If you owe small amounts of money, you can join a counseling program or straighten your finances out by yourself. You may have the ability to negotiate much lower payments, just be sure any debt modifications you agree to are written and that you have a copy.

If you?re unsure, then you need to learn what a Chapter 7 bankruptcy can do for you, as opposed to what Chapter 13 does. Investigate the benefits and pitfalls of both. Online resources may be able to provide all the information you need. Learning about bankruptcy is not simple, so call a bankruptcy attorney to make an appointment to ask questions.

Before you file for bankruptcy, make sure you understand your rights. It is not unusual for creditors to claim that their debt is not able to be discharged. There are few debts that can?t be discharged. If the bill collector is trying to deceive you, then report that company to your local attorney general?s office.

Declaring bankruptcy is not something most people aspire to, but can be unavoidable. You should now have some excellent advice from people who have personally struggled with the bankruptcy process. You will feel more relaxed about your own path when you learn from people who traveled it before you did.

New iPad Mini Delayed to 2014 [RUMOR]

Apple?s iPad mini was released last November, and not one week went by before rumors about Apple?s refresh of the product began to circulate. Though the rumors quickly subsided, most of them centered around the device getting an upgraded ?Retina? display.

Now, it appears that Apple might miss its yearly (and expected) product refresh for the iPad Mini. DigiTimes today is reporting that production on the second iteration of the iPad Mini will not begin until the fourth quarter of 2013. The report cites unnamed ?industry supply chain sources? as stating the late manufacturing orders will push the product?s launch past the holiday season and into next year.

The device is expected to have the same 7.9-inch screen as the current iPad Mini, but with a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution screen, according to DigiTimes? sources. Also, the already small bezel on the iPad Mini is expected to get even smaller, for a nearly bezel-free form factor.

Though the iPad Mini might not make it out for Christmas, DigiTimes is also reporting that that the fifth-generation iPad will be sold sometime in 2013. The device is, unsurprisingly, rumored to be both thinner and lighter than the most current iPad. Production on the new iPad is rumored to begin sometime in July.

Guard/Reserve center recognized for energy efficiency

The Armed Forces Reserve Center at Pelham Range. Photo by Stephen Gross.

slideshow ALEXANDRIA ? The Armed Forces Reserve Center at Pelham Range went platinum today.

Although completed and open since October 2011, a joint-venture building owned by the Alabama National Guard and Alabama Army Reserve got its grand opening celebration today and was honored as the first building in the state to be named a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified ?platinum project.?

?It?s like a checklist, or a point system,? said Chris Miller, chairman of the Alabama branch of the U.S. Green Buildings Commission, on the building?s platinum ranking. ?There are certain items and criteria a building needs to meet in order to achieve that ranking.?

The commission is a a nonprofit which advises builders on how to create the most energy-efficient structures.

Miller said projects seeking a platinum ranking have to take a ?holistic approach? in the design, construction and maintenance of a building. While being great for the environment is an added benefit to a highly efficient building, the selling point is typically the cost.

?You?re giving the owner an efficient building that doesn?t cost them an arm and leg to operate,? Miller said.

Some of the cost saving and efficiency features of the Reserve Center are straightforward and simple, like lights that turn off automatically when a room isn?t in use. Others are more complex and innovative such as the geothermal system, which uses underground pipes to heat the building?s water.

?The geothermal system itself saves the building so much money in operating costs,? said Leah Allen-Cooper, the marketing coordinator with JMR Architecture in Montgomery, which designed the building. ?It nearly cuts the energy savings in half.?

Alabama Army National Guard Col. Brian Barrontine, the construction facilities maintenance officer at the Reserve Center, said the technical innovation incorporated into the structure is only part of what makes the Reserve Center unique. The building, which acts as a training facility for the Guard and Army Reserve, was itself an efficient solution to creating one facility for dual roles.

?Frankly, it?s just good use of the taxpayer dollar,? Barrontine said of the $6.7 million building, which came in under its estimated $7 million budget. ?We need more buildings that are going to last. There are some buildings right now we can?t afford to use.?

At Thursday?s ceremony, Barrontine thanked several partners who helped in the building?s construction, including JMR Architecture and Whorton Engineering.

While the Reserve Center is the first building in the state with the platinum ranking, Miller said there are more than 80 projects in the state working with LEED standards to obtain the ranking.

Officials: NM mom struck by lightning, gives birth

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? A pregnant New Mexico woman has survived a bolt from the blue to give birth to a bouncing baby girl.

Authorities say Kendra Villanueva and the baby's father Ian Gordon were watching fireworks with friends on July Fourth when lightning struck both of them in the front yard of an Albuquerque home.

KRQE-TV (http://bit.ly/12GdD6f) reports Villanueva was just weeks from her due date and was rushed to University of New Mexico Medical Center where she had an emergency Cesarean section. Mother, father and baby survived relatively unscathed.

The couple named the baby Kimberly Samantha Rose Gordon and said they'll also call her "little Flash Gordon."

Ian Gordon says the new parents are hoping their new daughter will "run fast, or save the universe."

a new opinion in Telecommunications about Apple iPhone 4S 16 GB

Product Type: Apple Smartphone

Newest Review:?... superb addition from apple. Finally the last advantage of getting an iPhone is the service Apple provide, their genuis' in their stores ca... more

Looks

iPhones are one of the slickest phones on the market, the simple black or white case with large screen and subtle apple detailing makes for an outstanding looking phone. Everything about the iPhone is classy, the silver trim on the sides, the understated sim card slot, there is nothing out of place on this phone.

Price

The iPhone 4s costs over ?400 sim free or you can get them free on contracts. I pay ?35 a month for mine (I got it when it first came out) however now with the introduction on the iPhone 5 you can get much cheaper contracts. The iPhone contracts are quite high compared to other phone brands, but this comes about through the popularity of the items.

Features

Will quickly go through the features that I think set the iPhone apart from other phones. The app store is far better than those for android and windows. There is a vast choice of apps on the store that are unavailable on other platforms. Another great feature is the integration with iTunes. iTunes is a brilliantly simple programme to control the iPhone from, I've recently tried using Samsung and Nokia programmes which I have struggled to get to grips with! The iCloud service from apple allows you to store data "in the clouds" taking up no space on your phone, this adds to the memory available on your phone which is a superb addition from apple. Finally the last advantage of getting an iPhone is the service Apple provide, their genuis' in their stores can help with most problems and will replace faulty items quickly within 1 year of purchase.

Issues

The only 2 issues I have with the iPhone are battery life and the lock button. The battery life is quite short when cellular data on if you use Twitter or Facebook or anything that requires 3g often. The Samsung s3 and s4 battery life are much better than the iPhone which is really a shame, as it is annoying losing battery when you are out or having to charge your phone constantly. Lastly the lock button on two of my iPhones has jammed, it doesn't make the phone useless, just very annoying to use and lock the phone through on screen touch buttons. To be fair Apple fixed both the issues as it was within the years warranty, I just feel that it shouldn't happen twice in a year.

In conclusion I feel iPhones are still the best phones on the market, their app store really sets them apart from the other platforms, and although other platforms may catch them up, at the moment nothing beats Apple and the iPhone.

Summary: A must buy, sets itself apart from other phones.
